Blasting, heavy equipment operating, and pile driving with impulsive and vibratory devices constitute seismic sources. These man-generated events attenuate with distance, but under certain circumstances, have the potential for causing damage to structures, sediment fills, groundwater supplies, etc.
National and international regulations impose limits on the maximum vibration levels allowed at any given place. Vibration monitoring methods are an effective tool to control if these limits are violated. Seismic sensors are installed to measure the intensity of ground vibrations caused by these waves. Two parameters are commonly measured to monitor blast-induced or construction-induced vibrations at a site: particle peak velocity and frequency.
